The Director of Finance serves as a strategic advisor and operational leader responsible for overseeing all aspects of JACF’s financial systems, reporting, and compliance. Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer, this role is essential in shaping JACF’s financial direction and sustainability. The Director of Finance is responsible for budgeting, forecasting, audit management, and financial systems oversight. This role requires a detail-oriented, proactive professional with strong analytical skills, nonprofit financial expertise, and the ability to lead process improvement across departments.
Primary Responsibilities:
What You'll Do
Financial Planning and Strategy
● Lead the organization’s annual budgeting and financial forecasting processes in coordination with department leaders.
● Manage cash flow planning to ensure financial sustainability and effective resource allocation.
● Serve as a strategic financial advisor to the CEO, leadership team and finance committee on organizational planning and decision-making.
Financial Reporting and Compliance
● Produce timely and accurate weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for internal use, board reporting, and external stakeholders.
● Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and reporting requirements at the local, state, and federal levels.
● Oversee audit preparation, coordination with auditors, and implementation of post-audit recommendations.
● Maintain accurate and organized financial records in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit best practices.
Accounting Operations
● Oversee and complete accurate day-to-day accounting activities, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger functions.
● Ensure timely reconciliation of accounts and monthly close processes.
● Monitor and manage vendor contracts, banking relationships, and treasury operations.
● Supervise and utilize accounting systems and tools (e.g., QuickBooks, Monday.com), ensuring efficiency and data integrity.
Cross-Functional Leadership and Process Improvement
● Partner with department leads to support budget adherence, track expenditures, and deliver financial insights that inform decision-making.
● Lead process improvement and change management initiatives within the Finance function.
● Document financial procedures and policies to support transparency and operational consistency.
● Foster a culture of accountability and continuous improvement across financial systems.
Employee Lifecycle and Operations Support
● Maintain personnel records.
● Oversee compliance documentation processes, ensuring timely submission to JA USA and recommending corrective actions as needed.
● Oversee offboarding processes.
● Ensure all CRM entries for financial records are accurate and reconciled with QuickBooks and partnerships.
Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications (required)
What You Bring
● Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required
● Minimum of 5 years of finance experience, ideally in a nonprofit or mission-driven organization
● Maintain accurate and organized financial records in accordance with nonprofit financial best practices
● Experience managing audits, reporting, and compliance in a nonprofit setting
● Proficiency in QuickBooks and Microsoft Office Suite and the ability to learn Monday.com
● Financial strategy development and implementation
● Advanced Excel and financial modeling skills
● Strong technical skills, must be extremely proficient in technological systems.
● Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills
● Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
● Demonstrates strong critical thinking and discernment
● Critical ability to identify potential risks, inconsistencies, or suspicious information (e.g., phishing emails, fraudulent activity)
● Adaptability to changing organizational needs and environments
● Highest level of integrity, confidentiality, and professional judgment
